| On this page, I've assembled pictures and pedigrees of ancestors of the goats in our herd book. I started this section when I started the herd in 2002, so some of these goats are getting to be pretty far back in the herd book, but I still like having them floating around somewhere. My origninal intent was to post pictures of more and more goats, however, a bigger herd has led to less free time, so this section has been somewhat static, especially when it comes to reference animals from other herds. So, the main updates are either for adding animals who were in the herd for some amount of time, or for pictures of the dams of bucks I have brought in. This main page is for does who were born into or spent the majority of their lives as a part of the Castle Rock herd, while the Outside Reference Doe is a link for does who were not, and a seperate link for all reference bucks.

Sire: MCH Goodwood Weisbaden +*S 'E' Christabelle is one of the longest does I have ever seen. She is long, level, smoothly blended, with great depth of barrel, brisket extension, spring of rib, and she excells in general appearance. She is very level from hips to pins, even though her rump looks a bit steep in this picture- she was just out of the ring and didn't want to stand still any more, so we took what we could get. She has very good capacity, a strong medial, a very high and wide rear udder, with increased fullness in the foreudder. While her teats could ideally be larger, she has very open orifices, making her quite easy to milk. Her extremely friendly personality has made her a farm favorite, and she passes on that sweet personality to her kids. Christabelle passed away in December of 2011. Up until about two weeks before she passed away, she had the energy and look of a four year old doe, delighted in greeting all farm visitors, and would happily let goat babies climb all over her. She was very much our herd queen until the end, and is missed.

Sire: MCH-PGCH Ponders End MTB Wall Street I used to introduce this little doe as "Sara-no-I-didn't-name-her", as it does seem a little odd to have a goat with my name- though at least her name has a different spelling from mine. She's a refined little doe, who had to go grand champion a few extra times due to paper work errors. She has wonderful spring of rib, good depth of barel, tight sharp shoulders, thin pliable dairy skin, with style and elegance to spare. She does toe out slightly, and we would like to see a little more length of body. Her third freshening udder is well attached and even more capacious than her previous freshenings, with good teat placement, though I would like to see a slightly stronger MSL. She is proving to have a very consistent line of offspring, being the dam of ARMCH Castle Rock Sky Lupine, GCH Castle Rock Sarafina 2*M 2*D EEEE 92, MCH Castle Rock Lullaby, CH-MCH-PGCH Castle Rock Jamaica Bay VEEE 91, Castl Rock Scarlet Flax VVEE 90, and grand dam of SGCH-ARMCH CRF Castle Rock Alum Root VEEE 91, SGCH CRF Castle Rock Blizzard VEEE 91, and CH-MCH Sly Farms ML Hollywood. At an ADGA Nigerian Specialty show, her daughters Sky and Flury won "Best Produce of Dam", and were part of my winning "Dairy Herd" entry as well. I was devastated by the loss of Sara in early 2010 as a result of complications from kidding. She left a large imprint on the Castle Rock herd through her daughters and granddaughters, but I still miss her every day. DHIA:

Even though she was dam-raised, she could easily be mistaken for a bottle baby, as she still tries to jump up in my lap- which at her current size is a bit uncomfortable. We are very pleased with her udder- so far, she has accumulated eleven best udder awards over some very tough competition! She has lots of attachment all around, a high rear udder and a smooth foreudder with a strong MSL and nice large plumb teats, and milks down to almost nothing. She has perfect milk stand manners and if, by some strange happenstance, another doe gets to be milked first, Sky will loudly let you know that this is NOT okay, and should not happen again in the near future (if ever). Sky is now retired and keeping watch over the herd as our current queen and settler of disputes amongst does. With both of Infinity's parents being
finished champions, we hoped that she would do as well in the show ring as
they did. We've finally gotten
official confirmation that she has
followed in her parents' footsteps, and is now a finished champion herself. Her background
is full of milkers, and she was able to earn her AR milking star as a first freshener. She has a lovely
udder, with great capacity and nice all around
attachments. She stands incredibly wide in the back with
nice angulation and has good brisket extension. We'd like
to see a little more flatness of bone in those shoulders, and a higher ear
set, but other than that, she's a very nice little
doe.
Infinity has been retired to live out her days at a friend's farm- we wanted to enjoy her retirement, away from the possibility of any accidents with our bucks. Her greatest influence has been her daughter GCH CRF Castle Rock Tesla, who herself has produced some lovely offspring.

a show ring queen- set her up and she won't move; put her in the back of
our truck and she runs right into her crate, eager to get to the
show. I suppose it could have something to do with her knowing just how good she looks. Honey is
well put
together- she's got wonderful feet and legs, and is
long, sharp and has a great front end assembly. Her udder has very
nice shape and texture, with exceptional side attachments, and very easy to milk
orifices. She had to go grand champion a few extra times in order to
finish because her ears somehow kept reabsorbing her tattoos, but she finally got there, becoming a fourth
generation finished champion on her maternal side.
We've decided that at 11 years of age, it's time for Honey to retire. We try our best to let our does tell us when they are done having kids, and honey has started showing her age. We'd rather she have a nice retirement than to take a chance with another pregnancy, so she'll spend the rest of her days keeping an eye on things and keeping our LGD company.

She has a long, lean neck, a level topline, nice depth and strength of body, and walks with tremendous width between the hocks. She is very long and deep, with one of the widest rumps in the herd, and looks like a much larger doe than she actually is. She fills that escutcheon with a high wide udder and with her second freshening, her teat placement seems to have significantly improved over her first freshening. With the addition of Nigerians to the ADGA herd books, Sunshine came out of retirement and completed her championship as a nine year old, and to top that off, as a 10 year old, 12th freshening doe became the AGS National Champion Doe! Sunsprite has lived up to my expectations, freshening with a well attached, soft udder with very milkable teats, and one of the stronger MSLs in our herd. She is proportionally a very long doe, with a an exceptionally tight front end assembly and super sharp withers, good feet and legs, and she practically prances while on the move. She is the dam of GCH CRF Castle Rock Tuscan Sun and GCH Castle Rock Sun Sapphire. Unfortunately, when we lost our website a few years ago, that meant all of the pictures that lived on that server and not one particular computer were lost. Raven's udder is all I was hoping for and
more. These udder pictures were taken less than two weeks
into her second freshening. She has a very wide and high
rear udder, a smothly blended fore, plumb teats, and excellent
texture. In addition, she walks on very strong feet and legs, has
great spring of rib, smooth blending, lots of femininity, and she levels
out on the move. This little doe isn't terribly people friendly, but she's
getting better all the time, and her kids have all been very friendly. She
has gotten so much better that we're convinced she would be a total lap

Sire: PGCH The Promises Pay It Forward I waited through several sets of triplet bucks to get Moon, and even then she was the only doe from a set of quads. I definitely think she was worth the wait! Moon is one of our smallest milkers, but that doesn't stop her from doing her best to keep up with Sky in the milk bucket. On a one day test at the AGS National Show, she produced 4.1 lbs of milk- an incredible amount of milk for a doe that can't be much over 40 lbs. herself! At the time, she was under 17 inches tall, and managed to earn a spot on the Top 10 list, both for test points and for high milk for one day milk test! The next shortest doe was three inches taller than Moon, and it's too bad we weren't able to do another milk test in 2009 to see how she would have done. She stands on a great set of feet with exceptionally strong pasturns, has good capacity both in body and udder, and carries a high wide udder that does not move when she walks. She has tight elbows, with exceptionally flat bone and good sweep to her ribs, along with very dairy skin. She is one of my favorites on the farm, being not only a great milker but also having an outstanding personality. Without our realizing it, in early 2010 Moon had somehow developed tooth rot in a molar, which caused the teeth on either side of it to start going necrotic as well. She never exhibited any signs of pain, or reluctance to eat while on the milk stand, but apparently the tooth pain kept her from eating enough and we lost Moon very suddenly to pregnancy toxemia just a few days before she was due. In 2012, she was awarded her SG (superior genetics) designation, and I'm very happy with the influence she continues to have on our herd, most notably through her son Harvest Moon, as well as daughters CH Castle Rock Moon River, and CRF Castle Rock Lunar Eclipse.

Several years ago I had been in line to get a

When Tamara offered me a chance to pick up this Zenith daughter (a repeat
of the breeding I had wanted a doe kid out of), even though I needed another
doe like I needed a hole in my head, I couldn't turn down the
opportunity. Rain freshened with a very nicely shaped udder- high and
wide, with a broad area of attachment, strong MSL, and super easy to milk
teats. At her first show as a first freshener, she was beat out for
Best of Breed by her six year old dam who is still going VERY

Rain's 2013 pregnancy seemed exceptionally hard on her- she seemed extremly unhappy about the whole affair, and I've made the difficult but humane decision to retire her from breeding.

As much as it loved her, it despises Blizzard- I cannot get a decent shot of this doe- certainly not one that shows off the 38 she scored in rear udder height. Take my word for it though, this is a doe who just keeps getting better with age. She is long and level with nice blending, a great front end assembly, a wide rump, lots of dairyness, and very good angularity. Her udder is well attached and has excellent texture and plumb teats, although I would like to see them a bit larger. She has matured into being one of our larger does with tremendous body capacity and width, though she retains her dairy character at the same time. She earned her milking star at a one day milk test at the AGS National Show where she produced over 4.2lbs- outstanding for a first freshening yearling, and good enough to earn her a spot on the Top 10 high milk for one day test in 2008!
Blizzard has proved that not only is she standing the test of time by scoring VEEE 91 at five years of age, but that she is passing on her good looks-- her daughter, Black Ice (by Guy Noir), scored a 92 on Linear Appraisal and was the 2015 Total Performer at the ADGA National Show, and another daughter, Snownamie (by Harvest Moon),earned an LA score of 90 as a second freshener, and produced the 2015 ADGA National Champion.

Tesla (named after the electric sports car, not

Her udder is high and wide with a tremendous area of udder attachment and excellent texture that milks down very well. She has this quiet sense

Luna is a very small, well put together doe, who would probably do better in the show ring if she were just a wee bit taller. It is somewhat frustrating that a doe from a breed that is supposed to be small has gotten comments like "she lacks the stature to move her further up the line", especially as she is very proportional and everything comes together in an eye pleasing way. She has very nice dairy character, sharpness, strong pasturns, good front end assembly and length of body. Her udder is held up with a snug MSL, has butter soft texture and very good teat placement, and her capacity continues to hold up very well as she is moving into the "aged doe" category. Luna left our herd as a kid, but I jumped at the chance to bring her back when it came up, and am so happy I did- she's a very affectionate doe (one might even call her agressively friendly since she will shove her head under your hand while you attempt to pet someone else), who makes me smile just about every day.

The summer of 2017 was a brutally hot one in California, and we had some crazy swings in temperature- from reasonable summer heat to extremely hot with little overnight cooling. While she is a long bodied doe, I would like to see a little more width of body when viewed from above. She has soft udder texture, good teat placement and size, a strong foreudder, and is very easy to hand milk. As a five year old, she started to really hitting her stride, winning quite a few champion challenges, and Best Udder awards with an udder that is high, wide, capacious, and well attatched, with a strong MSL, and well placed teats. She continued to do well as a six year old, racking up her 20th Best of Breed award and winning a Best Udder in Show against the big girls. As a seven year old, she made it clear that she was so over this showing thing, and we figured with 21 Best of Breed wins, she has earned the right to relax at home. Update: in 2019, Roxanne freshened for the 10th time and looked so good, I just had to see if she would be okay with showing again, and at two weeks fresh, she picked up two more BOB and best udder wins! I was having second thoughts about show time, and wouldn't you know it- she walked into the ring and acted like showing was her favorite thing in the world, and ended up going reserve. What a diva! She has wonderful capacity, udder texture, high rear udder, medial suspensory ligament, teat placement, a very smoothly blended foreudder, and area of udder attachment. Like most of the does in my Sara line, she milks down extremely well and easily with large teats and open orifices. She has increasing width and depth throughout, her front legs are well placed under her shoulders, with good brisket extension, though ideally, those shoulders would be a bit tighter. Black Ice also has one of the widest rumps in the herd, a trait she shares with her dam. After doing so well on Linear Appraisal as a seven year old, I decided to take her to a show for champion challenge, and wouldn't you know, she went and won a best udder of breed and then Best Doe in Show! Less than a month later, she traveled to the ADGA National Show and was first placed aged doe, and was the 2015 Total Performer for Nigerians, and in 2016, she won two more Best Doe in Show ribbons! River, littermate sister of our buck, Harvest Moon, reminds me so much of her dam in both look and personality. She does show more angularity at this age than her dam did, but otherwise, is very similar in build, being small, well put together, and having more dairy character than you would expect just from looking at her. She freshened with an udder that is living up to my hopes- high and wide in the rear, a very nice medial, plumb teats, lots of attachment, good capacity, and a smooth foreudder. During our 2012 Linear Appraisal, River scored a 40 in rear udder height, and scored very well in dairyness, foreudder attachment, and rear udder arch. River is also a bit of a ham, which I find endlessly endearing. River has two daughters who have both finished their championships and have earned their Superior Genetics designations- SGCH Castle Rock Moon Beam, and SGCH Castle Rock River of Rain.
River enjoyed a long and full retirement, peacefully passing away at the age of 16, fiesty till the end. She is buried in our pollenator garden, not too far from her son, Moon Raker. After so many years, it's a little strange to not see her face in the herd any more.

This doe is the product of a repeat breeding that produced our herdsire, Bentley. She has loads of dairyness, straight front legs, and excellent udder texture. Her MSL is strong, and she has easy to milk teats, a strong foreudder, and a lovely rear udder arch. Karmann has a nice level topline, smoothness of blending and angularity with a very feminine face.

The beginning of the 2010 kidding season started out very buck-heavy, and I had decided that I'd have to sell Honey Heart's doe kid to fill some reservations. But the longer I looked at this doe, the more I came to realize that I couldn't let her go- she was just too nice to pass up. She's a long stretchy doe who is quite similar to her dam in length and width of body, softness of udder texture, smoothness of blending, and flatness of bone. She has a high, wide udder arch, good teat placement, and good overall area of udder attachment. She also has a flat wide rump and the high thurls we are trying to make more common in the Nigerian gene pool.

Sire: Twin Creeks BW Montego Bay +*S ++*B Sarafina embodies so much of what I am aiming for in my herd. In 2011, she and Annika tied for the highest "dairyness" score in our herd, and Sarafina topped that off with an E for udder texture. She's sharp and elegant with flat bone, wide spacing between the ribs, thin dairy skin, angularity, and one of the best (widest, flatest) rumps in our herd (she got an E on rump during Linear Appraisal). Sarafina has a very good rear udder arch, easily walks around her capacious udder on very sound rear legs. She is a quiet, dignified doe with good milk stand manners.

Boo is a member of our second set of sextuplets to be born on our farm, and another kid I decided to keep before she was even completely dry. She is very well put together with good angularity, length of body, width between the hocks, a wide level rump, with good depth and width of barrel. She didn't get to many shows until her third freshening (in 2013), but finished her championship quite handily in one weekend. Her udder is quite soft, capacious, high, and wide with a nice MSL, and large teats that express easily. She's more dairy than she looks with a very strong will to milk. She is not milking quite as much as we would have expected this year, however, producing quintuplets does seem to have an impact on how well a doe produces, so we won't hold it against her.

Annika, as is typical of her dam line, was a bit of a "sleeper" doe- in spite of having a high score for dairyness, and one of our higher yearling first freshener appraisal scores, she was rather overlooked in the show ring. However, as a second and third freshener, she showed us a tremendous area of udder attachment and capacity, good teat placement, and a high, wide rear udder, which tended to carry her to the head of the line, and earned her several rosettes. In 2013, she freshened a few days after the Nigerian Specialty show at REDGA (which was frustrating as I had really wanted to show her there), but finished her permanent championship at her first show of the year. She is very clean over the rump, stretchy, smoothly blended, with plenty of depth and width, and is one of our milkiest does. If anyone could make me regret skipping 305 day milk testing in 2013, it would be this doe. I'd like to see her a bit tighter in the shoulders. Her daughters by Cleveland Sage, SGCH Castle Rock Angelika VEEE 90 and CH Castle Rock Annika, have inherited their dam's dairyness and productivity.

Snownamie has been a favorite from the beginning, and I am quite happy with how she has matured. She has good smoothness of blending, angularity, length of body, strong scores in dairyness and udder attachment, and an excellent head, though she could use a little more tightness in the shoulders. She has a very well balanced udder that is held high with a very strong foreudder and MSL, excellent udder texture, and teats that are a good size and easy to express. This blue eyed doe is one of our friendliest girls, and she prefers to follow us to the milk room, rather than run ahead as most of the other does do, wagging her tail all the way and looking quite pleased with herself for having some manners. We are extremely proud of Snownamie for producing the 2015 National Champion and Best Udder (seen directly below)- Flash was her very first kid! Another one of her daughters, Polar Vortex, easily finished her permanent championship as a first freshening two year old. She is such a delight to have on the milk stand that I am incredibly disappointed that due to a non-resident of the farm not following directions, she now has scar tissue in one of her teat canals, making it very, very time consuming to keep her in milk. We probably will never get her back to the show ring or back onto DHIA as a result of this, and whether she will be able to participate in future LA sessions is also in question.

Sire: Copper Penny ROF Calico Jack Sunsilk is a long bodied doe with lots of depth of body and really nice general appearance with good blending and she shows a very nice amount of dairy character. She has a very nice front end assembly with straight front legs, and I appreciate the angularity on this doe. Her udder is well attached, with good teat placement and texture. Time and space constraints kept her out of the show ring until her second freshening as a three year old, where she promptly went out and won three grand champion ribbons and two Best of Breeds- more impressive to me is that this meant she beat herdmate GCH CRF Castle Rock Roxanne two times in champion challenge! Before taking Sunsilk to the 2015 National Show, she had always been a very easy to settle doe- basically if she looked at a buck in the fall, she would settle and produce quads. Since that show, she failed to settle, even living with bucks for months at a time. I am stumped as to what happened at the show to make it so she never settled again, but after failing to produce kids in 2018, we decided to move her along to a pet home.

Sire: Castle Rock Tanzanite +*B *S Flash never made it into the show ring as a junior because every time I went to pull her out of the pasture to get her ready for a show, she was in yet another funky/awkward growth stage, and ended up staying home. She is our ugly duckling of a kid who has turned into quite the swan! Her first show weekend was all it took to win her permanent championship. We had a Nigerian Specialty show just a week after she completed her permanent championship, and she was once more GCH, and part of our first place Dam and Daughter entry, and our first place Best Three Does entry, and she repeated all of those wins again in August at the Sonoma County Fair. In 2015, she started the year out rough, with a challenging delivery on a Friday the 13th, which lived up to its bad reputation, and suffering a few complications from that. After lots of care, she finally bounced back, and bounced back in a big way! After winning National Champion and National Best Udder, she went on to be part of our first place Best Three Females, and Best Dairy Herd entries. I love her general appearance, with that long lean neck, blending into her withers, and a great topline. Her front legs are set right under her shoulders, she has increasing depth and width of barrel, and her back legs are angular with good width between the hocks. Her udder is capacious and well attached, with soft texture, and large easy to milk teats. She is so feminine and elegant, but clearly also a powerful doe without being course. Flash was killed by a coyote in February 2018 just a few days before she was due to kid for the first time since 2015. Of all the goats on our farm the coyote could have picked, it could have been literally anyone else and it would not have been as devastating. There are so many things to say, but that would be an essay that would take up way more than anyone wants to read here. There's a huge hole in our herd as we were counting on her genetics to help carry the herd forward, and to lose that opportunity so unexpectedly has me reeling a bit. DHIA:

She has very soft udder texture, and even though her teats could be larger, her orifices are very open, and she milks down really well. I would like to see her tighter in the toes and her teats placed a bit closer to her MSL. I can't believe how much udder capacity she has for such a little thing too. She's one of the friendliest of our friendly does, and usually has a much more pleasant expression on her face, but was not happy that even though she was standing still, I was not giving her constant wither scratches.

She stood second at the National Show to the doe who was the Reserve National Champion, and was one of four does to get pulled out for the Best Udder competition. I like her width of muzzle, depth of body, brisket extension, udder capacity, strong MSL, and excellent texture. Keeping weight on her has been a little more challenging than it is for most of our herd (we usually have issues with over conditioning rather than under), which was true of our LA session in 2019, when the appraiser said it affected her general appearance, giving her a lower score than she probably would have gotten otherwise. Our temperatures have been a roller coaster this spring, so we didn't get to see what was going on under all that hair of hers until the day before our session. Oh well- if there's something we've proven over and over, we can get more condition on anyone- even ourselves! We brought her condition up in time for the National Show, where she was in first place for her class until the very last minute when she and the third place doe flipped places, and went on to be an important part of our first place wins in the group classes. At her first not-freezing-cold show as a first freshener, she easily finished her permanent championship. She can be a little bit of a ditz when it comes to the milk stand (you do this twice a day, seven days a week-- how can you possibly be confused about where your head goes?!? Hazel is a quiet little doe who looks quite a bit like Easter Bonnet when both of them are unclipped. While she had a tendency to hang back as a junior, being in milk seems to have triggered an insatiable curiousity about everything, which may lend itself to her getting into trouble more than the rest of our milkers combined. She's a very balanced doe, with a pleasing profile, and reminds me a good deal of her dam's dam, Sky. Her udder has a pleasing shape, with a nice MSL, strong attachments, and decent capacity for a first freshening, though we're not thrilled the first freshening is at three years old. Keeping minerals in balance has gotten increasingly challenging over the years for some reason. Could be the years of drought affecting our water supply, could be where hay is coming from as more and more good hay fields are converted to nut orchards, could be feed and mineral companies changing their formulations, or could be something we haven't pinpointed yet. Anyway, we have a few does who are first freshening three year olds, who have freshened very nicely, but are definitely at a disadvantage against other three year olds in the show ring working on their second or third freshenings.

There are so many things I appreciate about this doe- she has wonderful dairy character, a wide rump from thurl to thurl, a really good front end, and a well attached udder that is high and wide when viewed from behind. While she is named Sun Maid, after a rose, her color makes me think more of the brand of raisins, which led me to calling her Raisin, which somehow morphed into Rey. Though she has done quite a bit of walking on her back legs and hopping around the show ring, if she manages to stay on all four feet, she shows off how lovely she is and winds up near or at the head of her class. Her second freshening udder is lovely, and she seems to have stretched out even more this year. According to Linear Appraisal, she has an excellent head, back, rump, and udder texture, and I can't argue with any of that. I'm very pleased with how she is maturing and her quiet, sweet personality. We lost Sunmaid far too early, but have her son, Castle Rock Rainbow Sunblaze, to hopefully continue her legacy in the herd.

She's definitely an example of needing to be patient and knowing that this set of genes takes a while to come into its own. She has very good body capacity, and an extremely high rear udder with a surprising amount of capacity for a doe this small, and she comes into the milk room every time with a very, very full udder. Despite her small stature, she's done fairly well at the few shows she's gone to, winning her class several times. |
